2023 Winning Artist: Bridget Beaty

Artist’s Statement:

When I think of pride I think of light in the darkness. Through the hate and violence pride is a time when the community is able to come together to heal and support each other. It’s about celebrating the differences and diversity in the community. When crafting my design I knew I wanted to do something inspired by the 70s. Pride Northwest values showcasing moments in history so what better way to follow that than by highlighting the year Portland Oregon had its first parade? It was also important to me to create a design that all ages would appreciate. Older audiences will enjoy this design as it has a retro feel, but so will younger audiences because they enjoy wearing clothing inspired by this decade. I wanted to specifically keep young voices heard while creating this piece. Throughout my process, I took criticism from various of my LGBTQIA+ peers to make sure I was on the right track to making something they would be excited to see and wear. I am a 17-year-old from Beaverton Oregon and last year I attended my first pride parade with my girlfriend. I had never felt so comfortable in myself; it was the most uplifting experience. I was driven by reminiscing on those memories every day when working and I think that is apparent in my final design. As a queer person who has a passion for graphic design, I was ecstatic to find out about this opportunity. Overall my piece is an uplifting, bright design that all ages will appreciate.
